As far as I remember (and there may be other versions), Los de Chacabuco band was founded by Ángel Parra in response to a request by the Army chaplain Varela, who asked for assistance for the Mass he celebrated for both prisoners and soldiers.

Our first musical presentation was the Creole Mass by Ariel Ramírez. We sang this version until it was replaced by one of Ángel’s compositions written in Chacabuco.

We also performed other songs, usually based on Latin American folklore, which we played in the weekly shows authorised by the military.

    Filistoque is a real-life person in all his mighty height (1.90 metres tall). I always remember him laughing. In Chacabuco, we shared a house for nearly ten months. Around him, you were never allowed to become depressed or get into a stew over our situation.

    I recited this poem in the National Stadium. I continued to do so in the Chacabuco prison camp, earning the nickname of “Venancio” from my fellow prisoners.
